For a while now I've wanted to get a bunch of my friends together and make a first person shooter. I've had an idea for a western themed shooter based around collecting money to upgrade your weapons. Each player would use revolvers, rifles and other western guns to fight other players for money or gold nuggets. They could spend this money on new weapons or upgrades to the weapons they already had. Instead of playing towards a set kill count players would try to earn enough money to "buy" the rights to win, almost like buying the deed to the town. In theory a very skilled player could use the crappy starting weapon that they chose for an entire game and never spend any of their money but on the other hand he could spend money on weapon upgrades to give himself an advantage over other players making it easier to earn more money.
There are some details about the game that I haven't been able to decide on yet. I haven't decided whether or not this type of gameplay would be better suited for a round based system or a timed respawn system. Im not sure if players should be able to purchase upgrades at any time or only when they respawn. Depending on which system I choose it could have implications on the balance of the game. There needs to be some way to keep skilled players with good guns from running away with the game.
